"Jailbird" by Alexander Kaletski

  • Perhaps best known for his cardboard paintings, Russian artist Alexander Kaletski creates works that speak to his moment in time while also expressing his desire to experiment across media.

Born in Soviet Russia in 1946, Kaletski earned awards as a young boy for his early paintings, however, his first career was in the theater: he first trained as an actor and parlayed that training into a vibrant career as a thespian and television personality. In the 1970s Kaletski was forced to flee Russia for fear of persecution and eventually ended up in New York.

Once in the United States, Kaletski embraced various new art forms but found his passion in a return to painting. Inspired by the disposable cartons and boxes that lined city streets, Kaletski selected cardboard as his substrate of choice, and soon his masterful aesthetic was born. His work rose to a remarkable level of acclaim between the late 1990s and the early twenty-first century, with examples of his work being included in major exhibitions around the globe.
