"Banana" by Yanqing Low
Yanqing Low (b.1985, Singapore) is an emerging contemporary artist working in a figurative vein. She earned her BFA from LASALLE College of the Arts and has mentored with Rebecca Léveillé. She works in a way that is heavily informed by drawing, painting with bold lines and gestures that lay her process bare. Her work has been shown in both Singapore and New York. She was recently part of PoetsArtists’s ‘Adorn Me’, an online exclusive, and ‘Painting the Figure Now 2019’ at WMOCA. She was also part of two group shows at Site:Brooklyn Gallery, New York earlier in the year – “Art on Paper” and “Birthday Suit”.
"Bodies, to me, are expressions of vigor, possibility and connection; They are where emotion and intuition meet, made coherent through introspection and analysis. I use them in my paintings and drawings as metaphors for impermanence and change, often in relation to personal identity and sexuality, employing a personal vocabulary of bold strokes, colour and distortions to express an inner world made opaque by noise and structure. These bodies are motifs to me, as much as the patterns woven into them, used for their familiarity to build beguiling rhythms."Yanqing Low
